Orchids Through the Lens

Dr. Charles Bracker

Orchids are among the most beautiful and diverse life forms. With an estimated 30,000 natural species and over 100,000 cultivated hybrids, orchids have become America’s second most popular house plant.

The photographer, Charles Bracker, has been a member of the Purdue University faculty since early 1964. In 2000, he was forced by disability to give up his teaching and research programs at the University. Raising orchids was the hobby of his wife, Anri, who passed away in 2001. In memory of Anri, Charles has expanded the range of orchids into a substantial collection, pursuing the theme of "Diversity."

The orchids are grown in a facility at his home in West Lafayette. To accommodate a wide range of orchid plants from diverse geographical locations, several basement rooms have been converted into separate environmentally controlled growth facilities. The facility currently houses about 1500 plants.
